How it works

A personal inventory with heart.

Pass It On is a simple way to record what you own, who should get it, and the stories behind each piece. Think of it as the personal-property side of your estate plan, the part a will doesn't capture.

1. Create your account

Sign up with your email, verify, and walk through a short onboarding interview. We use the interview to adjust the interface — whether you'd like things plain-spoken or feature-rich, whether you're planning for a family or managing a business.

2. Add your items

An "item" is anything you want to document — a piece of jewelry, a house, a bank account, a recipe book, a car, a collection. For each one:

  • Name, description, category (jewelry, furniture, vehicle, financial, etc.)
  • Estimated value and appraisal details
  • The sentimental story — why it matters and where it came from
  • Location, storage, and any special handling notes
  • Photos (snap from your phone, or upload from your computer)

No item limit. Add as many as you'd like, in your own time.

3. Add your beneficiaries

A "beneficiary" is anyone you'd like to receive something — a spouse, child, sibling, friend, charity, trust, or organization. Name, relationship, contact details.

4. Assign items to beneficiaries

For each item, choose who gets it. Assign to one person, or split across many with percentage shares (e.g. 50/50, or 60/20/20). Add notes that explain your reasoning. The app keeps your percentages honest — they can't exceed 100% per item.

5. Export your plan

When you're ready, generate a Personal Property Memorandum — a clean PDF listing everything: items, beneficiaries, who gets what, and the stories. Pair it with the will or trust your lawyer drafts. It's a reference document, not a legal one.

You can also export everything as a JSON file plus a ZIP of your photos, in case you want a backup or want to take your data elsewhere.

Your data, your control

Pass It On offers zero-knowledge encryption. When it's on, everything — item names, descriptions, beneficiary details, photos — is encrypted on your device before it reaches our servers. We store the scrambled version and we can't read it.

If you'd rather not, your data is still protected by encrypted connections, encrypted storage at rest, and strict access controls. The choice is yours.

You can delete your account at any time. There's a 30-day grace period in case you change your mind, and then everything is permanently erased.

Use it anywhere

Works in your web browser on any device. There's also a native iOS app with camera integration for capturing items on the go, and an Android app. Your data syncs across all of them.

Important: this is not a will

Pass It On helps you organize and document your wishes, but it is not a legal document. The Personal Property Memorandum it generates is a reference meant to accompany a will or trust prepared by a qualified attorney. It does not replace professional estate planning.
